Bernardo Crespo: My extensive experience in digital marketing and transformation has allowed me to see firsthand the tremendous benefits that technology can bring to businesses. However, I also witnessed the negative consequences of being constantly connected. Many C-suite professionals and their teams found themselves overwhelmed by digital noise, which hindered their creativity and effectiveness. This sparked my interest in digital detox as a critical component of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It's essential to address how we engage with technology, not just how we implement it.

James Fintel: That makes a lot of sense. How would you define digital detox, and why do you think it is so essential in today's fast-paced digital world?

Bernardo Crespo: Digital detox refers to the intentional process of disconnecting from digital devices—be it smartphones, computers, or tablets—to reconnect with oneself and the physical world around us. In today’s fast-paced environment, where we are inundated with information at every turn, it’s crucial to take a step back. This disconnection allows us to regain our focus, enhance creativity, and improve our mental health. The irony is that while technology is meant to facilitate our lives, excessive use can lead to burnout, anxiety, and reduced productivity. Embracing a digital detox is about finding that balance.

James Fintel: As the Academic Director in digital transformation at IE Executive Education, how do you incorporate the concept of digital detox into your teachings and programs?

Bernardo Crespo: I emphasize that technology should serve us, not the other way around. In my courses, I teach not just about digital tools but also about the human element of digital transformation. We discuss the psychological impacts of constant connectivity and how it can lead to decision fatigue. I encourage my students to implement strategies for managing their screen time and establishing boundaries. It’s crucial to cultivate an environment that fosters mindful engagement with technology. Bernardo Crespo: The receptiveness varies from one organization to another. However, I’ve noticed a growing trend among companies recognizing the importance of mental health and well-being. Many leaders understand that their employees' productivity and creativity are directly linked to their state of mind. As more executives experience the benefits of digital detox themselves, they are increasingly advocating for these initiatives within their organizations.
